Educators' Downloads

Last updated June 26, 2006

The files that are available for download on this page are in Microsoft Word, MS Publisher or MS Powerpoint. If you do not have Publisher, most likely your local printing shop will. Be sure to carefully review the files before printing. Feel free to make any changes that you desire (for example, you may change the common names listed for the WIWD on the postcard). Most of the files are available in both English and Spanish translations (and several are available in French).

If you have any problems downloading any of these files (or have any questions), please contact me ( Lisa Sorenson ) and let me know. Also, if you have suggestions these materials, I would very much appreciate your input. We are continuing to work on a number of additional files (e.g. more Powerpoint presentations on the project, wetlands, teaching techniques, etc.) that will help you with your educatin eforts. They will be added to this page, so check back frequently.

WIWD Postcard - Zipped MS Publisher file: Revised version uploaded June 19, 2006. This is an information postcard on the WIWD. It prints 4 to a page (front and back) and looks very nice in color. Print them on white cardstock. The cost of printing 100 color postcards (25 sheets) & having them cut is about $17 at Kinko's. Be sure to take a look at the common names listed for the WIWD and include those that occur on your island.

Field Trip Note Book - Zipped MS Publisher file: Revised version uploaded June 19, 2006. This is a 16 page "notebook" containing all of the field trip activities in Wondrous West Indian Wetlands. It is much lighter and easier to carry around than the workbook. I recommend printing the outside page of the notebook in cardstock and the inside pages with regular paper. Although there are some color pictures in the notebook, it's probably not worth the expense to print them in color. The field trip notebooks cost about $1/book to print and staple together at Kinko's; cheaper if you print them in large quantities at a print shop.

WIWD Project - Zipped MS Powerpoint file: Revised version uploaded June 19, 2006. This is a powerpoint presentation on the WIWD and Wetlands Conservation Project: History and Current Activities. It is a ~20 minute presentation (talking fast) that can be given at workshops (in the morning) to provide participants with background on the project and what we do. The show is a little long (46 slides) so feel free to delete any slides/details you think are unnecessary. You may want to add a slide near the beginning of the presentation to say a little bit about yourself, your agency's background, how you got involved in the project, etc. You should also try to make the presentation as relevant as possible to your audience - talk about your country's wetlands and the threats to them and the importance of these wetlands to WIWDs (or other water birds if you don't have WIWDs), etc. In the Notes Page View, there are speaker's notes for each slide. Be sure that Powerpoint is set to "on-screen show" in page set-up. The slide show is animated so be sure you preview it in slide show mode (or do "animation preview" of each slide) so that you are familiar with the animations. Make any changes that you desire in the animations. The presentation was created on a MacIntosh computer so there's a chance that there could be some minor formatting or font glitches when the presentation is opened on a PC. If you work on a Mac and need a "stuffed" version of the file, let me know.

What is a Wetland? - MS Powerpoint file: Revised version uploaded June 19, 2006.This presentation explains what makes a wetland a wetland (presence of water during at least part of the year, hydric soils, water-loving plants). It covers some of the material in Chapter 1. It is a work in progress as I plan to add more slides on zonation, succession, and wetland types. Check back for the revised version. The show has some animation so be sure to preview it. There are speakers' notes in the Notes Page View.

Mangroves of the Caribbean - MS Powerpoint file: Revised version uploaded June 19, 2006. Use this powerpoint presentation to teach the identifying characteristics of the 4 different species of mangroves in the Caribbean. A fun and engaging way to present the show is to do it as a quiz with your audience. Show each slide in turn and ask for a show of hands, "How many think this is a red mangrove? How many think this is a black mangrove? How many vote for white mangrove? How many think it is buttonwood?" Then tell them the correct answer and go over each of the identifying characteristics listed in the notes. A few things are animated. There are speakers' notes in the Notes Page view.

Puppet Show Script. Uploaded January 3, 2006. This is the script for our puppet show Wetlands are Wild, created for us by the Bahamas National Trust. The show can be delivered by 2 people, although 3 is a bit easier.

Puppet Instructions. Uploaded January 3, 2006. File contains instructions for making the theatre and puppets. Depending on your time and resources, the puppets you make can be very simple (e.g., cut out of cardboard and decorated with markers and felt clothing) or they can be more elaborate (sewn with a sewing machine). See photos for ideas on how to make your puppets.
